About Satpura National Park

Satpura National Park, located in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, India, covers diverse terrain of forested hills, valleys, and streams within the Satpura Range. Established in 1981, this national park spans over 524 square kilometers and forms part of the larger Satpura Tiger Reserve. Its dense forests support a rich variety of flora and fauna, including Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, Indian bison (gaur), sloth bears, and a wide range of bird species. The park's geography is characterized by steep sandstone ridges and narrow valleys, which provide excellent conditions for adventure trekking and riverine exploration along the Denwa River. Satpura is famed for its relatively undisturbed wilderness where visitors can experience wildlife with fewer crowds compared to well-known parks. Several notable landmarks within the park include the Pachmarhi plateau, often a base for visitors, and the extensive river canyon systems. Activities such as jeep safaris, elephant rides, and canoeing are popular to navigate the forest and spot elusive wildlife. The combination of biological diversity, varied topography, and limited human interference makes Satpura a distinctive destination for ecotourism. The park works with local tribal communities and forest authorities to preserve its natural heritage and maintain sustainable visitor experiences.
